Douglas Mitchell Spencer
"Spencer" or "Spence" to his friends was born in Brandon, Manitoba in 1948. His post-secondary education began with scholarship studies in Math and Chemistry at Carleton University. Enjoying a facility for biology and physiology, and realizing he was neither nerdy enough to be a mathematician nor mad enough to be a chemist, Spencer was attracted to the health care professions. He grad- uated from the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto, in 1971.
Before beginning 15 years in private practice, Captain Spencer served 5 years in the military. Adventures during this time included a tour of duty with the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, an opportunity to earn his paratrooper wings, and his selection to be the first Candian military Dentist to go to sea. HMCS Protecteur, the largest ship in the Canadian Navy, was outfitted with a dental clinic. Onboard ship Captain Spencer had a captive audience for his dental work but his fitness workouts were limited. There was no tread- mill. Running laps around the slippery deck of an oil tanker that is being tossed about in the North Sea is a challenge.
In private practice, Dr. Spencer worked with Dr. Tom Davidson, an excellent Dentist who remains a good friend and mentor today. Two other mentors in Spencer's life are John Black of FANE (Founda- tion for Applied Nutritional Education) and Mike Loomis, who heads the Sports Massage faculty of the Florida School of Massage.
Studying at the D'Arcy Lane Institute of Massage Therapy, where he
graduated valedictorian, Spencer gained a complementary education in
massage and an Ontario license.
Returning to Canada to assist his elderly parents in their transition to Longworth Retirement Residence in London (Grace and Charlie are models on this web site along with Spencer's good friend Corry!), Spencer was able to enjoy new purpose in his life and again plant roots. By adding personal training certification to his athletic avocations, his Massage School education and 30 years in the health care profession, Spencer has aspired to a new career in WELLNESS that truly nurtures his soul.
